At the same time ALA was in town,
Denver was also host to the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo – “the Super
Bowl of Cattle Shows.” Basically, it’s
the same idea as ALA, only with ranchers instead of librarians.
If you were listening to Denver Public Radio in the morning or reading the local papers, you would have heard a lot more about the number of animals at the Denver Colosseum than the number of ALA attendees at the Colorado Convention Center, stories with alluring headlines like: Yaks Compete at the National Western Stock Show.
It's true the cattle crowd and the information
specialists didn’t intersect very much, but, in a sense, we were all their for
the same reasons – to talk the common language of a far-ranging (no pun
intended) profession; to address issues of common concern; to display wares for
sale; to network and build partnerships; and to learn.
